President’s Message

Being entrusted to be at the helm of JPSFA for the second term 2019-2020, I, together with my team of dedicated committee will strive for the betterment of the Association despite challenging times ahead. I am excited about what’s in store for JPSFA this term as we see a good mix of young people serving in the committee.

Though the industry has been distraught over the SST imposed on Freight Forwarders, JPSFA has been actively pursuing for exemption on major taxable items and has over the several months of meetings and appeals by us and other Associations, there has been positive news to a certain extent. On this note, JPSFA remains a channel for our members to seek resolution when the need arises.

Many changes are also expected as we will likely see the uCustoms being fully implemented nationwide this year. With this, we anticipate many changes in the way of forwarding agent declaring their cargo. It should save manpower if everything goes on smoothly.

In addition, JPSFA is continuing to push for improvements at Johor Port in terms of security i.e. checking of seals, equipment and enhancement of the JCTS amongst others. We also hope for smoother import clearance after the completion of the upgrading work at CEA.

The Association membership continues to grow steadily with its current 150 members. For this term, we will focus on the following for the benefit of our members.

  • Arrange hard and soft skills training courses required by the industry.
  • Provide information and updates relating to the industry from government agencies and ports.
  • Have an impact on the development of regulation and operational issues.
  • Engaging with staff of member companies via our Facebook link on Association’s events and activities.

Given the challenging business environment faced by the shipping and forwarding companies, it is even more crucial now than ever to have an active and collective representation which we trust, members can find in JPSFA.

Lastly, we are planning for a Charity Run Event this year to fulfill our Corporate Social Responsibility to raise as much as possible for 2 charitable foundations and also to organize a Fund-Raising Dinner to celebrate our 28th Anniversary next year. We look forward to strengthening our image and reputation with the continued support from our members and business partners.

Thank you.

History

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, when Johor Port was just established, an active organization under the leadership of Mr.Mohd Shees was formed. This organization was then known as the Associated Shipping Club that looked after the interest of the tramping agencies. However the organization was not very active and with the advent of the container business, the need to form a registered association to represent all the sectors of the logistics chain was badly felt and hence mooted.

Thus, in 1992, after a series of protracted discussions and day to day issues arising due to the growing traffic, a group of interested shipping companies decided to form the Persatuan Wakil – Perkapalan & Penghantaran Pelabuhan Johor, also commonly known as Johor Port Shipping & Forwarding Association (JPSFA), to represent an official platform to deal with the Port Authority and other government agencies and associations.

The inaugural Annual general meeting for the election of the office bearers was held on the 29th October 1992 at the Lembaga Pelabuhan Johor’s Conference Room and a total of 18 registered members elected Mr. Wan Rosli Bin. Hj. Wan Yaacob as the President, Mr. Wan Rosli served as president for two terms until 13th June 1995.

Mr. Alvin Tan was then elected as the 2nd President and have been re-elected since then until 2010. Mr. Michael Cheah was then elected as the 3rd President and held office for three terms till 2016. The current President is Ms Stephanie Lim who is serving her second term. The increasing stature of the Association till today can be attributed partly to the dedication and sacrifices of an evolving committee and fully supported by a growing number of member companies which now stands at 150 member companies.

In 2000, the Committee supported the President’s proposal to purchase an Association building to facilitate and promote activities of the Association such as trainings, seminars, gatherings and committee meetings. This became a reality when the Association Building was officially declared open by the Honourable Minister of Entrepreneurial Development & Cooperatives Malaysia, YB Dato’ Hj. Mohamad Khaled Bin Hj.Nordin, on the 2nd July 2005. To reflect the many ports now operating in the State of Johor, the Association changed its name to Johor Ports Shipping and Forwarding Association on 23rd April 2012.

JPSFA is committed to protecting and enhancing the welfare of her member companies by:

  1. Maintaining a close relationship with the port terminal operators to enhance cooperation for the growth of the shipping and forwarding industry.
  2. Representing her members in various meetings, dialogues and discussions with parties such as, Johor Port Authority, Customs, Maritime Department, Ministry of Trade and Industry and other related government agencies and keeping members updated on any developments at all times.
  3. Organizing social activities/events such as Charity Golf Tournament, Inter-Games etc to meet social obligations as well as to foster closer ties with members and working partners.
  4. Instituting and upgrading member companies’s staff through training courses such as Kurses Ejen Kastam and Executive Diploma courses which are offered by Universiti Utara Malaysia. Providing a platform for member companies via her website for interaction and networking.

JPSFA has come a long way in terms of its presence and will continue to forge ahead with the ongoing enthusiasm and undivided support from her current and new members. The Association is committed to improving and upgrading the professionalism of the members it represents.
